On last Friday evening was not
a success within itself. The ladies
served ice cream and lemonade, and
financially and socially it was
a big success. About $30 were
realized.
After a great delay and much
trouble, only a few would consent
to spell. When it did begin Profs.
Lowrey and Parker commanded
opposing forces, and words were
given out from Webster's primary
dictionary.
Among the first to go down was
the lord Mayor. David failed to
come up to the "average" and accordingly
broke ranks. "B nia."
was another word that played havoc
with the spellers. and several fair
ladies abandoned the idea of spelling
it and commenced taking their
seats before the word got to them.
The News had a mouth-piece on
the floor, but Misses Parks, Jones
and McNulty did the spelling for
it, for which we return thanks.
Owing to the confusion in the
hall, it was decided not to attempt
to spell all down, so about ten
o'clock the programme closed -
amid great applause.
