MASTER TRAITS OF "DEMOCRACY".
In the "Democratic" State of Virginia, a poor man is not allowed to vote, but the rich are permitted to vote in as many different counties as they own real estate—they vote in proportion to their wealth. And yet Virginia is a pattern "Democratic" State!
In the "Democratic" State of New Hampshire a man must own a freehold to be eligible to the higher offices of the State; but Catholics are not permitted to hold office at all! New Hampshire though small in territory, has a mighty "Democratic" heart.
In Connecticut, since the "Democracy" have managed to get the upper hand, they disfranchised the Students in all the Academical and Collegiate Institutions of the State. In the "Democratic" creed as expounded in that State, the acquisition of knowledge operates to the same disqualification as the commission of crime. Students and convicts are judged unworthy of privileges which belong to Freemen. These are some of the distinguished traits of the party that has stolen the name of Democracy.—Western State Jour.
