CHRISTINSON'S FEET
AMPUTATED TODAY

Helvig Christinson, who suffered three days serious exposure after a shipwreck two weeks ago, had both legs amputated half way to the knees this morning at St. Ann's hospital. Doctors J. O. Rude and John Clements performed the operation. Dr. Rude reported that Christinson stood the operation well and is doing nicely.

Christinson's legs, back and hands were badly frozen during his ordeal of waiting rescue on Yakobi Rock after reaching it following the wreck of the Dixie. Fred Wetche and his 14-year-old son, Fred, Jr., did not make it to the Rock. Subsequent intensive search was finally abandoned last week.
