Full Text

We hear from Lisbon, that all the hopes that were entertained some time since of the re-establishment of the British trade on its former footing in Portugal are for the present entirely vanished. The French and Dutch are now the two most favoured nations in that country, though it is known that the former attempted to make it a province of Spain; and the latter laid the foundation of their present greatness, by dismembering it of its valuable possessions in the East-Indies. A striking instance of Portuguese faith and Portuguese gratitude, in return for 30,000,000 of our treasure, and the blood of above 50,000 of our brave countrymen spent in defending them against those very nations to whom they have given this unnatural preference.
