PURCHASE OF SITE STIRS WEST ALLIS
Citizens in Mass Meeting Protest Acceptance of McKowen Tract.

At a mass meeting in Colonial hall, Saturday night, to discuss the proposed purchase of the McKowen tract for a high school site, Ald. David Love, Social-Democrat, and Ald. J. Schumacher and E. Sellers were praised for their opposition to the purchase.

Walter A. Wenz, Milwaukee, was chairman, and Otto Conrad was the principal speaker.

The bonds for the purchase were sold April 7, and since that time the city has been paying interest on them, and is still without a high school.

It is probable that a definite policy of fighting the taking over of the McKowen tract will develop from the meeting.

The site is opposed on the ground that it is within 300 feet of a jail and a saloon, and is in line with a street which will be opened in the near future and thus compel vacation of the tract, it is said.

The district attorney has given an opinion that the purchase of the site would be illegal.
