Nearly half a million trees produced at the forestry school nursery at Montana State university were planted on Montana farms and ranches this year for windbreak purposes, according to O. M. Patten, Montana extension service forester with headquarters at Missoula.
Of the 453,100 trees distributed by the nursery in Montana, 48,675 were planted in 14 counties with the planting machine owned by the nursery. After giving 67 demonstrations with the machine this spring, Patten reports that he is convinced the tree planting machine will change the windbreak picture in Montana. The machine, he said, is much faster than hand planting and enables farmers to get the trees in the ground while they are in the best condition.
Besides trees sold to Montana farmers, the nursery also supplied Wyoming and Colorado with a large share of the trees ordered by these states under the Clark McNary act, and in addition surplus stock was sold to soil conservation districts in North Dakota. In all, about 785,000 trees were sold by the nursery.
Patten adds that farmers who wish trees from the nursery for planting next spring should get their planting site prepared now so that it may be in fallow during the winter. Orders for trees should be placed with county extension agents early this fall since the nursery will not accept orders after December 31 for spring delivery.
