Full Text

A Compliment to The Republican.

At the press dinner to Speaker Colfax at Washington, last week, Mr. Samuel Wilkinson, the head of the New York Times' corps of correspondents, and formerly of the Tribune and Albany Evening Journal, presided and introduced the guest of the occasion. His speech opened with a running notice of the favorite sheets in a pile of 'exchanges,' and included this kind mention of The Republican, which, like 'praise from Sir Hubert,' is praise indeed:

'Perhaps the sixth take out of this mass shall have to be explicative. For it is the Springfield, Mass., Republican that is wanted, and Bowles in quarto is small; but his paper is the resume of the news of New England, and the only Journal in the world that I know, of which it can be said that there is not a line in it but what can be read with profit and pleasure, or gazed at with envious enjoyment for the artistic elegance of its typography and arrangement. I never lay a copy of the beauty down that is not easily marred with scissors.'
