THE POLICE COMMISSIONERS.

An Investigation Begun Last Night at Request of Sergeant Williams.

The police commissioners held its regular semi-monthly meeting last night and were in session until after midnight. The greater part of the meeting was taken up in the investigation which is being made at the request of Sergeant Williams of the Howard avenue precinct. It seems that two patrolmen in that precinct, Dippold and Gallagher, are alleged to have circulated stories detrimental to Sergeant Williams, and those stories coming to the ears of the sergeant he called for an investigation. The stories are generally believed in the police department to be untrue. Last night Sergeant Williams stated to the commissioners the gist of the stories which he had heard as coming from the two patrolmen mentioned, and Dippold and Gallagher were questioned, as was also Sergeant Tiernan of the Howard avenue station. The board did not finish the investigation last night, but will continue it at the next meeting.
Anthony Carroll appeared before the board and stated that he had asked to see the records of the board meetings and had been refused by Clerk Southworth. The board voted that until further action was taken the records of the board would not be open to inspection by the public. Owing to the absence of President Mix, Commissioner Lee was authorized to sign the payrolls of the department. The petition of Mrs. Spang, wife of the late detective, for a pension, and the communication of Prosecuting Agent Niles in regard to witness fees for policemen making liquor seizures, were laid over to the next meeting. A report was received from the civil service commission stating that F. P. Fagan, Robert Bretherer and J. P. Whitman were eligible for appointment as supernumeraries.
Mayor Farnsworth presided at the meeting and was authorized to appoint a committee of three to select polling places for the April election. He appointed Messrs. Fogarty, Lee and Ullman. The board adjourned at 12:15 this morning.
