TRADES $18 WORTH OF CIGARS FOR
COPRA CARGO VALUED AT $14,000

From New York in the latest edition of "Tobacco," a publication dealing with the weed in various phases, comes the story of one Leo G. Kaufman, who claims to be the owner of a tobacco plantation in Hawaii and who has been seen sporting about Broadway of late, according to the magazine, with a rose pearl valued at $8000 shimmering in his necktie and wonderful Manila cigars of passing fineness protruding from his vest pocket. The cigars are said to cost 60 cents apiece in Manila.

"While such evidence of opulence might indicate that Kaufman devoted his entire time to the tobacco business," says the magazine, "he admits that his only present connection with the trade is the ownership of a Hawaiian tobacco plantation which he has not seen for four years."

"A Pacific trader, though not always so all-fired peaceful, Captain Kaufman trafficked in waters infested by sharks and on shores inhabited by cannibals. From Yap to Austral Isles they talk about him yet. On one of the Pellew islands in 1899 he exchanged 2000 Manila cigars, Londres size, for a schooner load of copra.

"At the prices that then obtained in Manila, the cigars the savages got were worth $18, the copra Kaufman secured was cheap at $14,000. But during the entire voyage from the Pellew group to Manila, Kaufman cursed, if he did not repent of the bargain. For the insistent natives taking every cigar that he had, left him without a thing to smoke for 28 days."
