The Republican County convention held at Irasburgh on Thursday last, was unusually large and harmonious. Nearly all the leading men of the county were present, and the result of the work done shows that there was a determination to nominate candidates whose fitness couldn't be questioned. The "one term" rule seemed to prevail and every candidate except the Judge of Probate is new. There was considerable strife in the north end of the county between the friends of Mr. Paine and Mr. Lane, for the senatorial nomination, but Mr. Paine was a little too strong for his worthy rival. Judge Cushman of Irasburgh received a very strong vote for second senator. Mr. Paine is comparatively a young man, but has had a large business experience, and has been a member of the House two terms, and will make an excellent Senator. Mr. Cushman is a lawyer by profession, has had great experience in law and court matters, is bright and honest and his services in the capacity of a Senator will be of advantage to the State. Levi Rowell of Albany and Geo. E. Braley of Troy, who are nominated for "side" judges will fill the office with ability. Mr. Rowell is a man noted for his honesty and his practical common sense. Mr. Braley is a man very familiar with law, business, and men and will make a lieutenant that no Judge will feel ashamed of.
Theophilus Grout of Newport, was nominated for State's Attorney by acclamation. Mr. Grout has been some years in practice in the county and has a good record as a lawyer. There has been some fear expressed, that his candidacy might do injury to his brother in the congressional matter, but we trust not. The General had nothing to do with it except to advise Theophilus not to become a candidate. L. H. Thompson was nominated for Judge of Probate in the caucus by acclamation. It is not necessary to extol his merits. The contest on the Sheriff was lively, there being three or four worthy candidates in the field. Hon. Orrin Taylor of Morgan, was nominated. Judge Taylor has had four years experience as assistant Judge, High Bailiff, has been a constable many years and will make an intelligent, reliable Sheriff. T. C. Batchelder of Greensboro, was nominated for High Bailiff. The resolutions which may be found elsewhere, show that the Republicans of this county adhere to sound republican principles; declare for a stable currency, the honest payment of the national obligations, economy in the State government and heartily endorse Gen. W. W. Grout as a fit congressional nominee.
The resolution will commend themselves to every honest man.
In the election of 1876 there were cast in third district, for Gov. Fairbanks 13,368 votes: for Mr. Bingham, democrat, 6,668; total 20,036. The democratic vote was unusually large owing to the effort of that party to get out a heavy vote. The vote for member of congress was much lighter and the Republican majority greater. This year, if the excitement about the bolt does not largely increase the vote, there ought to be a majority of 7000 on the republican side. It will require about 3500 ballots and to prevent an election the first time, 7000 votes to elect Barlow if the democratic candidate remains in the field on the plurality election, if such becomes necessary. Mr. Barlow's chances for an election do not appear to be very flattering.
