The Men's Protective Association.

The members of the "Single Men's Protective Association met last evening for organization, and for the purpose of devising ways and means whereby single men should be protected from the rapidly increasing encroachments of the fair sex of Pioche, and the continued arrivals of marriageable females. The meeting was organized by the election of C. H Patchen, as President; W. P. Goodman, Secretary; Julius Hoffman, Treasurer; and Jos. R. Hoag, as Sergeant-at-Arms.

The Sergeant-at-Arms was duly instructed to allow no female, on any pretense whatever, to enter the meeting room during the deliberations of that august assemblage. An assessment of five dollars was levied upon each and every member present for the purpose of procuring a meeting room and fortifying it to resist the onslaught of any of the opposite sex.

A resolution was introduced to the effect "that owing to the alarming increase of marriages in Pioche, that each member should pledge himself to withstand the wiles of all females (exercising the undoubted right of that sex in leap year) who should propose to any member during the year 1876." This resolution excited considerable discussion pro and con, members claiming that without protection being guaranteed each and every one and their being backed up by the association, that they would be driven into marriage by sheer force if caught alone and unprotected. At this point of the discussion, the door was forced open by a bevy of females who had learned the object of the meeting. A general stampede was at once the order; over chairs, tables, &c., went the members, and out of the windows heads first and feet first they scrambled, but whether they all succeeded in escaping, time will tell by their names not appearing amongst the list of marriages in two or three days.
