Extract of a letter from captain Timothy Bryan, of the ship Endeavor, of Salem, dated Amsterdam, July 17, 1816.
"I have seen captain S. Beville, of Hastings, Sussex, England, who went by order of the governor of St. Helena to Tristan d'Acunha, to inquire into the cause of the death of captain Jonathan Lambert; he says he has written twice to Mrs. Lambert, & that he has all captain Lambert's papers; that they have all been copied by order of the Directors of the East India Company, and are considered valuable; from his statement I presume they must be so, and must be a valuable and desirable acquisition to the Salem E. I. Marine Society. I have mentioned the subject to Mr. S. Williams. and presume he will obtain them and forward the same. It seems that capt. Lambert went out with two men a fishing and was never heard of after. They have, the man says, 150 casks of Sea Elephant Oil, Fowls, Pigs, vegetables, &c. &c. sufficient to supply thirty sail of vessels."
