From private Letters by the Packet we learn, That the national Discontent seemed rather to increase than abate ; and it was thought the Ministry would soon be changed : that the Armaments preparing by the Dutch, and several Particulars of their Conduct, with the Circumstances of Affairs between us and them, give us great Reason to expect a Rupture with them in a short time, for which Preparations seem to be making.-And if this should happen, that will probably bring on a general War again.- That it has been found necessary to keep up a considerable military Force, which had lately been augmented, and is likely to be more so.
That therefore the Taxes were continued very high, and paid unwillingly ; That the Ministry are greatly embarrassed by the Indian War, which
Nothing engages the public Attention at present more than any other Object. That Mr. Wilkes was gone to France, which his Enemies represented as a Flight: but that he was soon expected back, and that, it was thought, he would gain his Cause against the Ministry. That the Demolition of the Fort and Harbour of Dunkirk, which, it was said, had been done so effectually that it could not be made serviceable in many Years, is really executed in so slight a Manner, that it may be re-instated in three Weeks or a Month.
