My European
Excursions
By Edwin Ebern Petre
MILAN—TWO PICTURES.
Before me as I write is a beautiful photograph of the Cathedral which I have just purchased in one of the shops near by. From the steps up the 360 feet of its glorious tower it is as perfect a reproduction of this measureless mountain of beautiful architecture as one could desire. It was evidently photographed by a man who used the police to drive away every human being in sight, for not a soul is to be seen. It stands above its pavement as lonely as Mount Everest in the Himalayas.
Within my mind is another picture, I am entering the Cathedral for early morning mass. The newsboys are just out with the first papers on the streets, the street cars are full of laborers going to work. Crowding into the Cathedral are old women with shawled heads, workmen with newspaper packages of lunch under their arms, stenographers and clerks in better clothes and here and there a prosperous looking merchant. Each dips the fingers into the holy water and makes the sign of the cross and enters to kneel anywhere on the stone floor of the Duomo to pray. This is the true photograph of Milan Cathedral, but no camera has ever told us so.
