GOOD ROADS ARE SCHOOL BUS AID

Number of School Busses On The Highways Each School Day Surprisingly Large

Few people, other than school and highway officials and others having directly to do with them are aware of the large number of school busses which travel the highways each school day, a state highway bulletin says in referring to a recent survey reported by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce.

In 1931, according to the survey, a total of 96,500 motor busses were in operation in the United States. Of this number, consolidated schools used nearly fifty per cent. The number of consolidated schools is given as 17,100, and the total number of busses used by them as 49,000.

Other operators of busses are reported as: street railways, 12,500 busses; steam railroads, 5,000; independent bus lines, hotels, industries, and all others, 30,000.

In Minnesota, according to reports of the Department of Education, 36,000 children are regularly transported to and from consolidated schools. The exact number of busses used is not given, but the highway department bulletin estimates that if an average of 30 children traveled from and to their homes in each bus, 1,200 busses would be required.

The national survey of bus operations reports the average length of the route of school busses as four and a half miles. If this figure holds good for Minnesota, more than 5,000 miles of township, county and state highways are traversed by the busses each day that the schools are in session, and the savings in the operation of the busses on hard surfaced or good graveled roads, as compared with on unimproved roads, runs into the thousands of dollars annually, the bulletin states.
