Editor.—I am rejoiced at the high tone of the President's Message. It is American. The stand upon Mexican affairs, makes my heart glad. We have an issue and a right one. Democrats will contend for American rights—indemnity for our fellow-citizens, and redress of wrongs—Federalists will oppose them and side with the Mexicans in attempting to get our armies out of Mexico in disgrace, stationing them, perhaps upon a "defensive line," where they may be attacked with deprived of the advantage of attacking in turn, and where they would be cut off and murdered month after month and year after year. I see the issue plainly, and am confident of a result. If there be federalists in the Democratic ranks, this issue—American as it is—will drive them out. And if there be democrats in the Federal ranks, as I know there are, it will also rally them under the appropriate banner, where they may act effectively with their brother democrats for the good old cause shall triumph.
Editor, all this is clear to my mind, I have brought the great contest of 1800, and am yet spared to vote on this great issue, and witness another great triumph of right.
