Burglar Flees After Scream

An intruder who scratched the throat of Mrs. Verne Albertson, 812 Congress St., in an attempt to keep her from screaming entered the Albertson residence Monday and escaped with $18.50 taken from a purse. The burglar entered through an unlocked front door and turned off a table lamp in the living room. Mrs. Albertson awoke and at first believed her husband had returned home. However, sensing something was wrong, she spoke to the man and discovered that he was not Mr. Albertson. Reaching for a lamp near her bed, Mrs. Albertson started to scream when the intruder bent over her. In trying to stop the screaming, the man scratched Mrs. Albertson's throat. When Mrs. Albertson continued to scream, he fled and was followed to the kitchen by Mrs. Albertson who turned on the lights in time to see him leave by the back door. He was described as being tall, slim, fairly well dressed and wearing a light sweater and hat of ordinary description. Mrs. Albertson believed him to be a light colored negro. It was later discovered that

purses on the dresser in the bed room had been rifled and that $1.85 was missing.

Three colored men found in front of 725 Davison St. a short time later were brought to the station for investigation in connection with the burglary. Taken to the Albertson home, none were positively identified by Mrs. Albertson as the intruder. All were released when officers were convinced that they had been in Jackson and Albion all evening.

Two other colored men were questioned Monday in connection with Ypsilanti burglaries, and they also were freed. Several persons whose homes have been entered were brought to the station but were unable to identify any of the five men questioned.
