Full Text

Gen. Taylor on Duelling.

The Washington correspondent of the New York Express, says:

"One of the good stories of the day, and one most creditable to the president and administration, is connected with the application for the restoration of two midshipmen, dismissed by Mr. Polk, for being engaged in a duel. The Secretary of the Navy, in Cabinet meeting this morning, informed the President that he had read the petition, and considered that the midshipmen ought not to be restored. So thought the Cabinet. 'I am very glad of it,' said the president, 'for if the whole cabinet had thought otherwise, I would not have consented to re-appoint these gentlemen. I hate duels. I hate fighting, I hate wars, and will have no duelling men about me, if I can help it.'"
