Prospects, Present and Future, of the Labor Troubles.
New York, April 22. - The World says: "A strike of the employees of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad may be ordered in a few days, and if so, 22,000 men on the Hudson River Division will quit work. The trouble, it is alleged by the men, is due to the fact that Mr. Voorhees, the division superintendent, has reduced the force so that the men who remain are overworked. They also assert that the company is antagonistic to the Knights of Labor, and without reason. The employees committee says that the 700 more men on the rolls now than a year ago are Italian laborers laying the third track from Sing Sing to Seabrook, and that they receive only 85 cents a day each. The force of employees between New York and Buffalo has been reduced by 400 since Voorhees took charge. There are 22,000 men employed between New York and Buffalo, and to a man they are determined that if Voorhees is retained they will strike. An address will be forwarded to-day to Supt. J. M. Toucey, who commands the confidence of the men to an exceptional degree."
