POWER BOAT EMIL
Was Drifting Out Inlet When Engine Gives Up In Storm Sunday
EN ROUTE FROM COBBS STATION TO OYSTER
Smith Island Crew Offered Assistance But It was Not Needed

Oyster, Va., Jan. 20 The crew and passengers of the motor boat Emil were rescued Sunday, January 19, about 5 o'clock by the Surfboat of Cobb's Island Coast Guard Station in charge of Leon S. Bulman, B. M. 1 class, (L), Arthur L. Marsh, Mo. M. M. 1C (L), and Surfman George B. Kellam. The motor of the Emil stopped shortly after leaving Cobb's Island C. G. S. en route to this place and they were drifting out of the inlet when rescued.

The Emil was in command of W. H. Parker, who had taken F. A. Baxley, J. O. Sadler, J. D. Hopkins and J. P. W. Isdell to Cobb's Island Station for the purpose of viewing the site for the new Coast Guard Station at that place. During the time the boat was moored to the station dock a northwest gale sprang up making it impossible for the boat to lay at the dock.

The contractors having finished their work, started back to Oyster. On account of the weather conditions, it looking very stormy and the prospect of a high sea, the power surfboat at Cobb's Station was made ready and the crew stood by to help the Emil should assistance be needed. About 15 minutes afterwards the station lookout reported that the Emil was not under control and was drifting towards the shoals. Shortly afterwards the distress signal was sighted and the Cobb's crew started to the rescue.

When they arrived along side the Emil, they found her drifting on the edge of the sand shoals and the sea breaking over her. A hawser was made fast to the Emil and she was towed from the breakers to a safe point in the lea of the beach where the men on the Emil were transferred to the surfboat and the Emil was anchored. Later in the afternoon the picket boat CG-2305 towed the Emil to a position about one-half mile north of Cobb's Station.

Power lifeboat No. 4069 and the crew of Smith's Island C. G. S. arrived at Cobb's Island about 6:30 p. m. and offered assistance but it was not needed. The passengers, master and crew of the Emil expressed their gratitude to the crew of Cobb's Island for rescuing them.
