Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Philadelphia: to his friend in this town, dated June 18, 1783.

"Mr. R. Morris has lately triumphed over all his enemies. His account of his expenditures astonished his friends, and confounded and silenced even any how concealed the strongest personal resentment against him, under a zeal for the public good. His expenses for near two years, amount to only one third of the annual expense of former years. In the year 1778, one thousand tons of hay were consumed in Philadelphia; in 1780, only ten tons were consumed at the same post, in consequence of Mr. Morris's happy and frugal management. No wonder he has so many enemies. "The man (says the Count de Vergennes) who aspires after the honor of becoming benefactor of mankind, must not rest in pure, but timid wishes. He must possess the audacity of patriotism, and the intrepidity of virtue. He must be willing to make sacrifices." Perhaps the most expensive and difficult sacrifice a man can make to his country, is his reputation--This Mr. Morris has given up for the salvation of the United States."
