Nearly Reaches High Winter Mark Above St. Paul.
Dispatches from Aitkin, Anoka, Little Falls, and other up the river points indicate that the Mississippi is rising rapidly. A telegram from Little Falls states that it had risen five inches at that point within 24 hours. At Aitkin it was within eight inches of the high water mark and still rising. Reports from Anoka are that the rise is unprecedented in rapidity, and logs are floating back into swamps and onto the low lands.
Officials of the Minneapolis Mill company report that the river is within two feet of the high water mark attained last year in May. The rise on the upper river is just beginning to be felt, and it is thought the water this year will be higher than last. No trouble is anticipated, however. The dams are in better condition than ever before.
A telegram from St. Paul says that owing to heavy rains on the upper Mississippi and tributaries a disastrous flood is threatened at Aitkin, Minn., and vicinity. The water there is now within six inches of high water mark. Every logging dam in the country will be forced to open within a few days. The Sandy river dam at McGregor is washed away, and the Northern Pacific railway bridge is in danger. A large force of men is now working to save it.
No Rise Here.
The gauge at the Rock Island bridge indicates no raise in the river here. The stage on the contrary is lowering, but it would not take long to show a difference were the water to continue to increase in volume up the stream.
River Riplets.
The packet Sidney, bound north, put in an appearance today, the first passenger steamer of the season in these waters.
Capt. McGinley brought down his rafter, F. C. A. Denkmann, yesterday with 1,000,000 of logs in tow, having just completed the fastest round trip to Stillwater on record-17 days and 19 hours.
