Dr. Clarence Faust Speaker At Morehouse Founders Banquet

Dr. Clarence Faust, president of the Ford Foundation's Fund for the Advancement of Education and principal speaker at Morehouse College's 89th anniversary banquet Friday evening, told of the part which Morehouse (and its fellow institutions) played in writing a significant chapter in making universal education available to everyone, while overcoming the prejudices which at first beset so vast an undertaking.

"is one of the great achievements of our country," Dr. Faust declared.

The eminent educator pointed out how the prejudice against the education of women had been eradicated in time as institutions for women proved their merit and established the equality of the feminine mind with that of the male. Similarly he indicated how other obstacles to the education of all the people, a condition so necessary to the development of a "government of the people, by the people and for the people," have been removed, so that today more than one-half of all young people of college age in our country are in college. Morehouse's part in the extension of higher education to all the people has been highly noteworthy, Dr. Faust stated.

In his visit to Morehouse for this occasion, Dr. Faust was accompanied by his wife. Among out-of-town Morehouse alumni at the banquet were Dr. and Mrs. A. S. Mitchell of Birmingham, Ala.; Professor and Mrs. Charles Morton of Knoxville College, and Dr. John W. Davis, former president, of West Virginia State College and recently director of the Point Four Program in Liberia, West Africa. Dr. Mitchell, Dr. Asa G. Yancey, Dr. J. W. Davis, and Mr. Charles H. Wardlaw, Sr., a retired employee of Morehouse who is soon to leave Atlanta to make his home (along with his wife) with their children in New York City, made brief remarks at the banquet, which was presided over by President Benjamin E. Mays of Morehouse.

The principal speaker at the morning Founder's Day exercises in Sale Hall was Dr. Asa G. Yancey, chief of Surgery at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tuskegee, Ala.

In a brilliant address, Dr. Yancey, who holds the B. S. degree from Morehouse and the M. D. from the University of Michigan Medical School and who is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, traced the progress of medicine for the past twenty years, roughly the time that he has been out of (Continued on Page 2 Column 3)

Morehouse. It was a sort of "home coming" for the noted surgeon, who is a native Atlantan.

The president of the Morehouse Student Body Organization, John Barber, a senior from Detroit, was also a speaker on this occasion; and he gave an excellent address which was applauded at some length. Presiding at the morning 89th anniversary exercises, which were sponsored by the Morehouse Alumni Association, was Charles W. Greene of Atlanta, national president of the Morehouse Alumni Association.

Another event on the 89th anniversary calendar was a basketball game Saturday night between Morehouse and Albany State College. The observance of the 89th anniversary ended Sunday with the annual concert, of the famed Morehouse Glee Club in Sale Hall Auditorium at 4:30 p. m., under the direction of Wendell Whalum. The concert will be followed by a reception from 6:00 to 7:30 p. m. in the lounge of the Chemistry Building.
