Full Text

As the details of the White river railway bridge disaster come to light, the awful calamity loses none of its horrors. The number of victims cannot as yet be ascertained, but there is scarcely a doubt that it will be found largely in excess of the estimated forty-five or fifty. The work of recovery goes on slowly and each hour adds new horrors to the scene. The Professor of engineering at Dartmouth college, says the rails were defective, but that in all probability the accident was caused by the breaking of a car-wheel on the sleeper, Pilgrim. The death list will very likely foot up heavier than in any other American railway accident, even eclipsing the Ashtabula horror.
