Full Text

From the same of March 17.

The JACKSON CAUCUS, last night, completed its labors, and adjourned finally. Mr. Dromgoole, having consulted with his political friends, withdrew his Resolution for sending Delegates to Baltimore. Upon mature reflection, that scheme was found too strong: as Van Buren's friends will alone be there, and his nomination be inevitable, it was considered as showing the hand too plainly. Every effort, however, will be made to induce the People to send Delegates thither.

Mr. Dromgoole, in his remarks on this subject, denied that the Baltimore Convention originated in purposes of exclusive regard to Van Buren, or that his nomination will be the necessary result; an extraordinary declaration certainly, for one so deep in the arcana of the Republican party as that gentleman! Does he doubt that Amos Kendall's Kentucky Delegates will insist upon Van Buren? Or the Hon. Isaac Hill's Deputies from New Hampshire? Or the Pennsylvania Inquirer Delegates? Or those from the State of New York? Have not Government officers been the sole agents in getting up this Convention? Are not the active spirits in the employ of Government—Post Masters, Mail Contractors, Revenue Officers, Comptrollers and Auditors, the parents of this Convention, Van Burenites to a man? If Col. Dromgoole does not know this, he is less au fait than he is supposed to be. The ground upon which he rested the expediency of sending Delegates to Baltimore—namely, to harmonize the Republican party, and to meet organization by organization, is far more adroit, but not half so true, as that purpose of nominating Van Buren, which we have alleged, and really believe, to be the only object of the Baltimore Convention. The people of Virginia, at this moment, might disapprove a measure equivalent to Van Buren's nomination, but they may swallow the dose with avidity, when informed that no more intended than to promote the harmony, and secure the success, of the Republican party.

Event Details

The Jackson Caucus completed its labors last night and adjourned finally. Mr. Dromgoole withdrew his resolution for sending delegates to Baltimore after consultation, deeming it too overt for Van Buren's inevitable nomination. He claimed the convention aims to harmonize the Republican party, denying exclusive Van Buren focus, though the text alleges government officers are behind it for Van Buren.
