TEXAS—ALL ABACK!
The "glorious news" from Texas, announcing the capture of Santa Ana, &c. turns out to have been grossly magnified. We have received, by the last mail, later, and we regret to say, less cheering information:
From the Louisiana Advertiser, May 5.
Texas.—By a gentleman who arrived yesterday, we are credibly informed that Santa Ana has not been taken prisoner, much less sentenced and shot, as stated by a cotemporary journal. Our informant stated that there had been a fight, or, more properly speaking, a skirmish, between a body of the Mexican army, and another of the Texians, which terminated in the complete route of the former, with loss on both sides, but principally on the part of the Mexicans; and that Santa Ana, so far from being in the engagement at the time, was and is in the city of Mexico.
Among the documents received by the last mail is a proclamation of Gen. Houston, in which he gives an account of the battle, generally confirmatory of the foregoing. He states the Mexican force at 800, and its loss at from 16 to 20; his own force at 750, one man wounded. He states that Santa Ana was in the battle.
There are other vague and indefinite rumors of a battle, in which the Mexicans sustained a loss of about 900 men, but we imagine that they are all magnified variations of that referred to above.
