The following paragraph, with the usual mourning accompaniments, is gravely published as the leading article, in the Pittsburgh Statesman, received at our office this morning.
Death of President Jackson.—Intelligence has arrived in town, announcing the decease of the President of the United States. We participate in the general sensation of profound astonishment and regret which this event has created in this community. Opposed, on what we regarded as the soundest principles of patriotism, to the political elevation of General Jackson, we were still among those who viewed, with delight, the success which crowned his military exploits. With him, let us hope, that much of the rancor which has distinguished the recent conflicts of parties will disappear. Let the shroud which covers his corpse, henceforth hide the errors from which, as a man, and a politician, he was not exempt; and let us all unite to do honor to the memory of him whose exploits at New-Orleans occupy so bright a page in the history of our country.
