Head-Quarters at Machecoul,
11th Vendemiaire, Oct. 3.
We have just made a course in the centre of La Vendee. The English and the Emigrants projected a descent towards the Sables. Charette was to protect them. On the 4th or the 6th he collected about 18,000 men, who marched towards St. Cyr, near Lucon, and attacked that post. The Republicans sustained the shock so vigorously, that 800 men put the 18,000 to the rout—and killed about 400 of them, among whom were several Chiefs.
Charette, dismayed by several checks he has received, and the daily augmentation of our forces, is wandering from place to place without daring to stop anywhere, or being able to collect his followers.
