PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas.—(SNS)—The Tennessee State College cagers, from Nashville, Tennessee, won the Southwest Open Basketball Tournament, staged at Prairie View University by defeating Langston University, 71-59 in the finals.
According to William J. Nicks, director of athletics at Prairie View, the tournament was very successful, with fifteen college and service teams, representing the following states participating: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas. Tennessee State and Langston were seeded.
To reach the finals, Tennessee State turned back Mary Allen College, 79-21; Texas College, 62-27; and Arkansas State, 72-43. Langston rolled over Prairie View, 63-32; Tuskegee Army Air Field, 75-54; and Samuel Houston.
During the first round, Lake Charles defaulted to Texas College; Houston College tripped Wiley College, 46-42; Arkansas State upset Southern University, 57-39; Tuskegee Army Air Field dropped Kingsville Air Field, 36-34; and Samuel Houston defeated Sheppard Air Field, 64-35.
In the quarterfinals, Arkansas State won over Houston College, 61-37 and Samuel Houston routed Pensacola Air Field, 62-60. Samuel Houston later upset Arkansas State, 54-44 in a consolation match.
