ISLAND OF CUBA.—A commercial gentleman who has spent some weeks in this city from Havana informs his correspondent that he has obtained some information by negotiating with the best quarters in Spain. He has learned of a session that the British government of England has taken in the matter thus: The English demand the liberation of all the negroes introduced here by treaty of 1820. The document being called for by the government at Madrid referred the question to a junta of rich people—they say if the people of Spain with England of one exception has persisted, said to us it in Cuba saying cannot do it, what will be the result. Submission? The proud Spaniard seems to me to think the United States would ask to be ceded the island. I answered I believe the island would be received but you must acknowledge your own independence later! Uncle Sam allows you to bully the grand Bull and consents to take possession if he does, adieu here. Southern institutions will be compromised, and a valuable trade closed against us.

Event Details

A commercial gentleman from Havana shares information obtained in Spain regarding British demands for the liberation of slaves introduced to Cuba under the 1820 treaty. The Spanish government referred the matter to a junta of rich people, who indicate resistance despite general alignment with England, questioning the outcome in Cuba. Speculation arises that Spain might cede the island to the United States, which could receive it but later acknowledge Cuban independence, involving Uncle Sam (US) and John Bull (Britain).
