Paris, Nov. 3. Before Cardinal de Fleury went from Paris to Fontainebleau, his Eminence received a Visit from the Duke of Richelieu, to whom, amongst other Things, he said, as it were by way of Reproach, 'You don't acquaint me, Sir, with the Compliments which you have receiv'd upon your new Dignity of Lieutenant-General and Governor of Languedoc.' It was the Cardinal who had engag'd the King to confer this Dignity upon the Duke of Richelieu, who politely return'd the following Answer: 'My Lord, you have laid an Obligation upon an ungrateful Creature, who can never forgive your Eminence for having so greatly surpass'd in Glory, Cardinal Richelieu, my great Uncle.' This Answer which discovers the Vivacity and Politeness of the Duke, has been commended in all genteel Conversations.
