Endorsements of character have been received from Savannah, Ga., by I. Cohen, confined in the city jail on a charge of forgery, the endorsements being from persons of business prominence in the southern city. As yet, however, Cohen has not received the message he wants from the man whose name he used on the check which caused his arrest after he had presented the piece of paper at the Bank of Bisbee. He is hoping this man has written fully and in a manner that will clear him of evil intention.
Yesterday Cohen secured release from jail long enough to go with an officer before Justice Walter Thomas, whom he was anxious to inform that confinement in the jail was proving serious detrimental to his health. He said he was subject to heart trouble and that the close confinement, in an altitude to which he was unaccustomed, was fast getting away with him. He wanted release. The Justice, however, remanded him pending further developments.
Facts are not lacking to indicate that Cohen is the victim of foolish action behind which there was no evil intent. Some who have looked into his case here are convinced that this is true. Should proof come about the character that he promises to bring, he will be able to show that he has suffered an injustice.
