Full Text

The following is no fable. It actually occurred on St. James' Santee.
It was on the Sabbath, that two negroes met at a fork of the road. Both had been to preaching—the one to hear an Episcopal, and the other a Methodist Minister. Old acquaintance introduced a conversation, and of course the two sermons were discussed. The merits of the preachers were compared, &c. At length the elder negro said, "Ah, Brough, my preacher be berry smart man, berry larnt man. He tell us dat the narrow paat lead to hell and de broad paat lead to Damnation, and—" "Stop, stop," said the other, "If dat be de case bout boaff paat, Cuff will no follow none, but cut rite trough de woods."
