ALEXANDRIA. SATURDAY. MARCH 1.
We have to ask the indulgence of our distant friends for the space occupied in the Gazette of this morning with our local affairs—the election of members of the Common Council of Alexandria. It is not in itself, one would suppose, a subject worthy of filling a public journal; but extraneous circumstances ostensibly of a public nature, having been brought forward in aid of a more covert, and we believe sinister design, to effect a change in the present council, we feel it a duty incumbent on us to aid in elucidating the subject, so that the citizens may not be led away by the false vaporings of pretended friends who endeavor to mislead for the purpose of sopping their bread in the pan.
In giving publicity to the following, we beg it to be distinctly understood that we disagree in opinion with the writer on the most material points in his communication. We have no hesitation in declaring it as our opinion that the present council of our town are as capable of filling the situation in which they are placed, as any others that can or will be selected for that purpose, and much more so than a number of names we have mentioned; that they have acted wisely and with as conscientious a view to the public good and a proper economy, as the welfare of the town required.
We intended to have accompanied this publication with some remarks pointing out its particular fallacy: but a writer in this day's Gazette having taken a general view of the opposition to the present mayor and council, and having promised to more particularly notice a communication in the Herald of yesterday, which, of necessity must embrace the remarks of our correspondent, we forbear saying anything more.
