GENERAL INTELLIGENCE.

Shaking of the Union.--This Tariff question is an ugly business to get along with, and may bring us unto trouble yet. Mr. McDuffie has made a two day's speech in favor of a Bill reported by him to equalize the duties on imports.

After setting forth, in the conclusion of his speech, in strong language, the injustice of the protective system in its operation upon the South, he used these words of warning:--(Portland Cour.)--" I testify to this House, in the presence of our common God, that, if this system be not abandoned, South Carolina will not submit to it three months longer!!"

The Washington correspondent of the N. Y. Commercial Advertiser adds also that,

The latest accounts from South Carolina, received in private letters, which are probably more to be relied upon than their newspapers, represent the excitement lately prevalent there, to have settled down into a cool and deliberate determination to resist the laws of the Union, and throw open the ports to foreign commerce, soon after the adjournment of Congress.
