Full Text

When Miss Esther Hawse the school teacher at the Flats School over in Hardy County, went to her school last Friday morning a week ago, she found the room more or less mussed up and in a disordered condition and did not understand it but supposed some one had been there over night, to sleep there or steal, something. About noon she noticed water dripping down from the loft on her desk and sent for one of the patrons of the school who lived near. He came and got up into the loft and found a moonshine still and several gallons of mash. Sheriff Allen of Hardy County and his Deputy Sheriff were notified and came and took charge of the outfit. The still was about 6 gallon capacity and the box in which it had been shipped from a mail order house was found but the name on it that it was shipped to had been carefully scratched off. The still had been set on a small oil stove and set up against the chimney to cook and work and the smoke run into the chimney of the school house so that the smoke would not arouse suspicion. It is supposed to belong to some amateur who thought it would be safe in the school house where no one would ever think about looking for it, but when it got to leaking it spoiled the whole scheme.

Miss Esther Hawse found her school room disordered and later noticed water dripping from the loft. The shipping box had the recipient's name scratched off. It was believed to belong to an amateur hiding it in the school.
