A study of lottery operations elsewhere will be undertaken by the Virgin Islands government in an effort to prevent repetition of the recent lottery scandal in which the island lottery director and a cashier were fired.
In a substitute bill introduced into the Legislature, establishing the operating fund for the lottery for 1962-63, $9,000 has been added for the study.
Budget Director Morris F. DeCastro said the government hopes the study "will help avert what unfortunately happened last year.
Charged with alleged financial irregularities, the lottery director and cashier are awaiting trial on the charges.
Since then a new Deputy Commissioner, Carlos Classen, has been appointed.
Salary for that office for 1962-63 has been set at $8,500.
The previous director was paid $7,614.
