Full Text
This appointment of Senator Tallmadge is the commencement of a new era in the political history of Wisconsin, the design for which, as well as the means of accomplishing it, have been furnished by this city and vicinity. About two years since Mr. Tallmadge, in conjunction with several gentlemen of this region who had hitherto occupied distinguished stations in our political, financial, and active business circles, but whose importance and influence had through misfortunes and other adverse influences, very greatly waned here, united in the purchase of large tracts of land in Wisconsin, with a view to removing to their new purchases, and by the union of the influence and character, which they would take with them, obtain the control of the political and financial affairs of the territory. This scheme, which, while it affords a new theatre for the exercise of the eminent political and general knowledge and experience of the gentlemen referred to, will also doubtless incalculably advance the prosperity of the territory, and facilitate the development of its resources and capabilities for improvement.
