Full Text

Universal Suffrage.

In and out of season the Radicals have been preaching the doctrine of universal suffrage. Senator Cowan of Pennsylvania unexpectedly put the sincerity of their professions to the test in the U. S. Senate, by offering an amendment to the Negro Suffrage bill a proposition to make suffrage really and truly universal by extending the right to females. This was of course voted down by the Radicals as it was not universal suffrage they wanted, but negro suffrage. The intelligent females of our country were deemed by this party as unfit to exercise a right which they are willing to grant to the most ignorant and degraded of the African race. Let us hear no more of universal suffrage.
