Indian Officers Around.

Col. S. W. Daniels, U. S. Indian Inspector, Capt. T. J. Jeffords, agent of the Chiricahua Indians, and John P. Clum, agent at San Carlos, have all lately been in town. Col. Daniels arrived by stage on Tuesday, having previously visited the Chiricahua, San Carlos, Apache and Verde agencies. He will remain here until next Tuesday looking after the Papago agency. He will stop over one stage at the Pima agency and then go directly to California and thence to Washington. He is a man of experience in Indian and other public affairs, and, as a consequence, has well considered and sound views thereon, which are all that either fair white or Indian should ask. He informs us that as a whole he found the agencies thus far inspected, in a good average condition.

Agent Jeffords reports his flock in their accustomed peaceful and contented condition. What they would say if they could see him in the city of Tucson with a silk plug hat on, is more than we can conjecture. He excuses himself for wearing it here, by saying it has been fourteen years since he saw one, and that he is simply indulging a pardonable curiosity while in town. He wears it gracefully, but the attention of the third house of the next legislature must be called to any habitual wearing of plugs. In Helena, Montana, a man caught on the street with one on, soon repents his venture.

Agent Clum came into town from San Carlos about a week ago, with a small delegation of Apaches. He started them homeward on Wednesday and himself next day. He reports a very satisfactory condition of affairs at his agency and hopes they will continue with improvements. He is active and energetic and determined to succeed where so many have failed. Success attend him say we.

But what a difference in ideas about hats between him and Agent Jeffords! Instead of the silky, tall plug, he takes a low crown with brim nearly broad enough to cover his agency in case of need. And then its band! Well, it is different from that of Capt. Jeffords and no mistake. But it is a kind allowed in the country, and it is an open question whether this section is yet ready for silk plugs!
