Full Text

ALBANY, Feb. 24.

Last Week we had a southerly Wind accompanied with Rain, which raised the MOHAWK and HUDSON RIVERS to a very great Height; on Saturday the Ice upon the MOHAWK-RIVER, opposite to SCHENECTADY, broke up, damaged a Wharff belonging to Mr. John Viger, Junior, and swept away the Batteau-House: And Yesterday, about 10 o'clock in the Forenoon, the Ice on HUDSON'S-RIVER also broke up; but happily the greatest Body of it stopped upon the Flatts where it still remains. It is the Opinion of those who are best acquainted with the Effects of the Ice on this RIVER, that had it continued its Course, with the same Velocity it set off, the greatest Part of the Houses and Stores situated on the Docks, and in the lower Streets of this CITY, would have been demolished. The Ice has carried away the Piles that supported the King's Store and damaged two Stables.
