MUSICAL CONCERT

Mr. Editor—The announcement in your columns of the intention of the Litchfield County Music Society to give a concert on the 21st inst. must be highly gratifying to all those who delight in sacred melody. The increase of knowledge and experience gained from time and practice, added to the superior and well known qualifications of the members afford the strongest assurances that the performances will be of the same elevated character with those already exhibited. And if on a former occasion the public were surprised by an excellence and brilliancy of execution beyond any thing that was expected, may it not now be safely calculated that the society—with a greater length of time for preparation, and, if possible, a better selection of pieces, will fully answer all reasonable expectations?

It is not, however, with the feelings of the amateur solely that we look forward to this approaching festival—we anticipate it with pleasure, as affording satisfactory proof that the objects proposed to be accomplished by the establishment of this society are not, as some have apprehended, vain and chimerical, but on the contrary are likely to be realized with all their salutary results. The members, composed of the leading singers of different choirs, have here an opportunity of comparing their various degrees of proficiency—and they communicate and receive knowledge—a spirit of emulation and enthusiasm is enkindled that prompts to effort when other motives might fail—and withal, they imbibe a social feeling that harmonizes well with the delightful occupation with which they are engaged. The public too, by attending exhibitions of this sort, have an opportunity of comparing the different styles of execution—they learn to distinguish, and choose the best; and in short, to form a correct taste.

All these advantages, to say nothing of many others that might be enumerated, are the legitimate result of the successful operation of this society. And when we consider that sacred music, "The hymning our Maker's praise," constitutes an indispensable part of divine service among all denominations of christians—when we consider the peculiarly happy influence it exerts in abstracting the soul from sublunary things, and elevating it to those divine, how is it possible to be otherwise than gratified with the charms and improvements it is receiving from the successful efforts of this truly commendable society?
