Full Text

Hon. Samuel A. Smith in the Field.—It affords us much gratification to be able to announce that the Hon. Samuel A. Smith has consented to be a candidate for re-election in the third congressional district of Tennessee. He had declined a re-election, and two other democrats took the field against one know-nothing candidate. The two democrats have withdrawn, and Col. Smith has yielded to the wishes of his friends, and announced himself a candidate. We consider his re-election as certain, and we know of few men whose return to Congress will be so gratifying to the national democracy. It was Col. Smith who struck the first powerful blow against know-nothingism in the last Congress. He is a bold, straightforward, consistent, and talented national democrat.—Wash. Union.
