In the U.S. Senate on May 8, Senator Bristow opposed raising the tariff on lead from 1.5 to 2.125 cents per pound, arguing it matched the old Dingley rate and the House had wisely reduced it. Senator Aldrich insisted the Senate should act justly regardless of the House.

Full Text

Washington May 8.—Soon as the tariff bill was taken up in the senate today, Senator Bristow opposed an increase on lead from one and one-half cents per pound to two and one-eighth cents as provided in the new bill. He said the increased rate would make it equal to the Dingley rate. He held that the House had been judicious in its actions to reduce the rate. Senator Aldrich said it made no difference what the House did but that the senate should do justice. Bristow contended that the differential provided by the duty recommended by the committee on finance on pig lead is greater than the cost of smelting and is unwarranted.
