The enemy, perhaps remembering our late astonishing cavalry operations, did nothing more than fire one volley and break. Gibson continued the pursuit as rapidly as it was possible for him to move forward in the darkness.

The enemy kept his artillery on the pike, and after firing one round, limbered up and made off to the rear. Owing to Gibson's inferior force he could not flank the enemy and get at the artillery. The enemy sent the artillery to the rear ahead, and kept the cavalry right and left on the road to cover its getting off.

In the general charge which Gibson first made, he captured one battle flag. By continuing to press on, Gibson at length drove the enemy over the creek and upon the line of the rebel fortifications, in which they sought refuge and opened a rapid fire from carbines and the two pieces of artillery aforesaid.

In front of this barrier Gibson halted, but to feel the enemy's position, take a few prisoners, ascertain the enemy's strength, and then retreat, reaching a safe position in the direction of the Shenandoah by daylight. The enemy, finding that at last the bird had flown, set out after him at a trot, but did not succeed in overtaking him, as Gibson reached the Union lines in safety and without heavy loss.

This affair is looked upon as quite brilliant cavalry dash.

The idea of 300 men almost running 3,000 mounted rebels, driving them to their fortifications and capturing one of their battle flags, besides nearly capturing their two pieces of artillery, is indeed amazing and interesting.

In the course of the reconnoissance, and from prisoners, information was gained of high importance to the interests of the army.

Yesterday cannonading was heard. It appeared to be in the direction of Front Royal, and was probably another cavalry fight.
