REV. J.F. NUGENT, D.D.
IN MANCHESTER

Father Nugent of Des Moines spent several days in Manchester, the latter part of last week, renewing old acquaintances in this city and vicinity.

Father Nugent was born in Tiffin, Ohio, May 22nd, 1844, was ordained to the priesthood in May 1874, and about five years thereafter, came to Manchester and for four years ministered to the spiritual welfare of the Catholic congregations of this city and Delhi. While here he was admired by Catholics and non-Catholics for his many scholarly and Christian qualities. He delivered a number of public lectures to Manchester people, the most notable of which was the Memorial Day address in the cemetery on May 30, 1879, an address which doubtless has been equalled, but never excelled for an occasion of that nature. It was copied far and wide and did much to establish its author's renown as a thinker and orator.

That Memorial Day address may properly be termed the prelude of a remarkable career, for Father Nugent is today one of the foremost public speakers on the American platform.

The degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon Father Nugent by the noted University of Notre Dame, Ind., and he received the degree of Doctor of Laws from the Niagara University.

Shortly after Mr. Bryan became Secretary of State he tendered to Dr. Nugent the position of American Consul at Jerusalem, which position he was unable to accept.

At the urgent request of many Manchester people Father Nugent has partially promised to deliver another address in this city. If he comes it will tax to its limit our largest audience room to hold those who will want to hear him.
