CAUCUS. No. 4.
My last observations on the "Little Argus" noticed the inconsistency of those who constitute the democratic party.-When Washington and Adams conducted the affairs of the nation, they clamoured against high salaries, high taxes, great expenses, &c. No sooner was Jefferson in the chair, than the great officers of government must have, in a time of peace and plenty, higher salaries than was before given in a time of war, when the prices of the necessaries of life were much higher. Some taxes, to promote popularity, were abolished, whilst unnecessary expenses were incurred to a very large amount.
However important, and necessary for the honor and safety of the nation, that money should be raised and expended during the administration of Washington and Adams, every thing that concerned the public finances was reprobated by the democrats - and economy, economy, was their darling theme; and how has it been attended to since? Thousands and tens of thousands of dollars- yes, millions of dollars! are wasted, and the nation involved in a debt which the present generation will soon feel, and future generations loaded with. Is this economy? No matter whether it is or not-the word has answered the purpose of the democrats.
Federal officers are removed, and the friends of Jefferson have obtained their places; and all is right. If they should even pursue the plans of Washington and Adams, it would now, in the opinion of their supporters, be all right. But it would take a volume to relate all the inconsistencies of these self-titled republicans- There is not a word in the American language (that does not convey an idea of vice) that can be better applied to their character- than INCONSISTENCY.
The "Little Argus" concludes with a pathetic address to the citizens of his sect. in the following words:
"Republicans, by a general attendance this day, your House of Representatives, and by their means your whole state government may be Republican, and harmonize aye harmonize with the general government, at this important crisis. The day is ours if you attend in season; and be assured that every candid Federalist, who desires the peace and welfare of his country, will [yes will] wish you success."
The blessings of harmonizing with the general government, shall be the subject of another number. I will only observe in this, that in saying "the day is ours," the writer happened to be mistaken-The republicans, altho they gave a general attendance, lost the day, but saved their powder. No "candid federalist" wished them success; but next year, yes next year, they say it will be otherwise. I hope in God it will be otherwise, as to the Commonwealth at large; for notwithstanding federalism has been, as it always was in this town, successful in its wise exertions, it is not so now, in the election of members to compose its legislative department of government.
What the effect will be, the close of the present political year will in some degree discover;-already we hear of the tyranny of the democratic faction in the Legislature-bleed fruits of the "harmonizing" plan which has been lately a favorite topic in this antifederal papers! The next news will probably be, that these good democrats, these dear friends of the people, have worked out Governor Strong, who has been chosen by the people, and placed in the chair of government one who was not chosen, because he harmonizes with the wise administration of Jefferson. O! tempora! O! mores!

Main Argument
the democratic party hypocritically opposed fiscal policies under washington and adams but increased salaries and expenses under jefferson, leading to national debt, while their election rhetoric of 'harmonizing' with the federal government has resulted in tyrannical outcomes in state legislature.
