Full Text

To M. Elie de Beaumont, Counsellor, before the Parliament of Paris, on his generous Defence of John Calas. By Mr. Langhorne.

Beaumont distinguished by the liberal Mind,
One British Wreath thy honored Brows shall bind;
Nor, tho' Voltaire bestows immortal Praise,
Disdain this Offering of obscurer Bays.

Who scorns mean Superstition's base Controul,
And clears away the Rubbish from the Soul?
Whose Incense flames on Truth's transparent Shrine,
Who bows to Reason as the best Divine:
Who, while false Sanctions cruel Power invest,
Dares, nobly dares, for Innocence opprest:
For him the Muse with pious Care shall rove,
To cull the Pride of all th' Aonian Grove,
Stamp his fair Honours in her Strain sublime,
And bear her Beaumont o'er the Wrecks of Time.
