Washington, April 17. - (AP) Twenty-eight men and two women were called to trial in Federal district court today on charges of conspiracy to aid in setting up a national socialist form of government here in violation of the previous sedition act.
As the case opened, defense counsel asked that Attorney General Francis Biddle and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover be required to provide deposition on any investigating of potential jurors.
Selection of the jury, Justice Department attorneys estimate, will take at least two days.
The thirty defendants are charged in an indictment returned January with having conspired together and with officials of the German Reich and leaders and members of the Nazi party in the United States and with the intent to subvert the government militarily, unlawfully on defense of the military and naval forces of the United States Constitution maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment.
