and dozens of excursions, big and little,
the old commonwealth expects to make a
creditable display of her children on the
grounds. Other States will probably follow
and the general attendance may be consid-
erably increased in this way. The half
price on Saturday proved so great a success
at the outset, without in the least
injuring the receipts for subsequent days,
that it became evident how many people
felt the difference of even 25 cents, in these
times, and the rate having been fixed at the
cheap figure for the ten Saturdays remain-
ing there is reason to expect a receipt of
several thousand dollars from this source
alone. Meantime the general rush has set
in-the veritable tidal wave of patronage
for which the managers have been looking.
Everybody intended to go "in September"
and everybody seems to be on the
way. Rail cars and steamboats are
crowded, the Sound boats in par-
ticular having their staterooms engaged
ten days and even two weeks in advance.
Hotels are populous with long-expected
guests; the turn-stiles at the show click
from morning till night; the narrow-guage
railway around it is the best traveled line on
the continent, and the Centennial Commis-
sion is
a
body
of
the most
genial gentlemen ever seen in the
country. The people have taken up the
affair, in short, have begun to want to see it
instead of reading about it, and unless all signs
fail, the great Exhibition will march on to
a
triumphant end.
